Hot towel wet shave in London: what to expect

A hot towel wet shave is the closest and most comfortable shave you can get. It takes longer than a shave at home because most of the work goes into preparing the skin and softening the hair before a blade is used. Here is how a traditional shave usually goes, and how to get the best from it.
What happens, step by step
- Hot towel. A warm, damp towel is wrapped around your face for a few minutes. The heat and moisture soften the beard hair so it cuts more easily.
- Lather. Shaving cream or soap is worked into the beard with a brush. The brush lifts the hairs and lays down a cushion for the blade.
- The shave. The barber stretches the skin and shaves in short, careful strokes, following the direction your hair grows.
- Finish. Any leftover lather is wiped away and the skin is cooled and calmed.

How to prepare
You do not need to do much, but two things make a difference:
- Come with a few days of growth. Very short stubble gives the blade little to work with.
- Tell your barber if you have sensitive skin, shaving bumps or any cuts or spots, so they can work around them.
Is it good for sensitive skin?
Often, yes. The softening from the towel and lather means the hair is cut with less pulling than a quick dry shave. If you are prone to irritation, mention it before the shave starts.

Looking after your skin afterwards
- Avoid strongly scented or alcohol-heavy aftershave for the rest of the day.
- Use a plain moisturiser if your skin feels tight.
- Try not to touch your face more than you need to for a few hours.
