Beard trim guide: shape, neckline and how often to trim

A beard looks intentional when three things are right: the neckline, the cheek line and the overall shape. Get those right and even a short beard looks sharp. Here is what to ask for at your next beard trim, and how to keep it tidy in between.
Where should the neckline sit?
The most common mistake is trimming the neckline too high, along the jawbone. A natural neckline sits lower: about one to two finger widths above your Adam's apple, curving gently up towards the back of each ear. Everything below that line is shaved clean.

Cheek line: natural or sharp?
A natural cheek line follows the way your beard grows, with only stray hairs removed. A sharp cheek line is cut into a clean edge. Sharp lines look crisp with a skin fade, but they need tidying more often. If your beard is patchy on the cheeks, a slightly lower line usually looks fuller.
Shapes that suit your face
- Round face. Keep the sides shorter and leave more length at the chin to add shape.
- Long face. Keep the chin shorter and the sides a little fuller.
- Square jaw. A short, even beard shows the jawline off; soften the corners slightly.
Your barber can show you in the mirror where the weight of your beard should sit.
How often should you get a beard trim?
Most beards need shaping every two to four weeks. Short, sharp styles are at the shorter end of that range. Longer beards can go a little longer between visits if you keep the neckline clean at home.

Keeping it tidy at home
- Wash your beard when you wash your hair, and dry it properly.
- Use a few drops of beard oil to soften the hair and the skin underneath.
- Comb or brush it down each morning so it sits the same way.
- Leave the shaping to your barber. It is easy to take off too much.
